History of Winston – Salem
Winston-Salem, North Carolina, has a rich history rooted in both religious settlement and industrial growth. The city was formed in 1913 through the merger of two neighboring towns: Winston, a post-Civil War industrial hub, and Salem, a Moravian religious community founded in 1766. Salem was established by Moravian settlers from Pennsylvania who built a carefully planned, self-sufficient community centered around faith, education, and craftsmanship. Winston, by contrast, rose to prominence in the late 19th century with the booming tobacco industry, driven largely by the success of the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company.
